MIDDLE SCHOOL DISTANCE LEARNING

In the event that ASP is closed, we will shift our learning from the classroom to the home using this distance learning plan. “Distance learning” seeks to model the classroom experience, but takes place predominantly on our online learning platforms and on Zoom, an online conferencing and communications tool. In order to successfully shift to distance learning, students, parents, faculty, and staff, must work together to meet the challenges of learning from home. In order to reap the benefits of distance learning, each group is asked to follow their portion of the plan outlined below. As always, our Counselors are available to support students with any academic, social, or emotional needs that arise.

MS DL Plan

Middle School students are asked to:

  • Read and follow these expectations created specifically for Middle School students.
  • Follow the MS Distance Learning Schedule that is slightly modified from the current schedule.
  • Actively engage with and “attend” the online learning activities on time. Every class will “meet” at the beginning and end of their scheduled time, and teachers will give instructions for how the block will be used.
  • Get ready for school as though they are attending class on campus. This is an essential part of establishing a healthy distance learning routine.
  • Show teachers that they are engaged by contributing during Zoom calls, adding to discussion threads and by submitting completed tasks on time.
  • Use earbuds or headphones during Zoom calls, especially when siblings are present and participating in their own distance learning.
  • Collaborate with their classmates online as requested by teachers.
  • Reach out to teachers with any questions via email or during their daily Zoom calls.
  • Work to practice independent organizational skills in a new learning environment.
  • Maintain an appropriate space for learning to create a healthy distance learning environment. This is ideally in a public or shared space.
  • Manage screen time in collaboration with parents; read physical books instead of an online resource when possible, take notes or work on assignments on paper when possible.
  • Email ithelp@asparis.fr if any technical issues or needs arise.

Teachers are asked to:

  • Plan engaging lessons that are appropriate for distance learning.
  • Hold a virtual meeting for part of each regularly scheduled class period, but attempt to limit screen time to the extent possible.
  • Provide assignments, activities, and tasks on PowerSchool Learning for students to engage with during the designated class meeting time. Support students’ questions and confer with students via Zoom calls during the designated class meeting time.
  • Communicate clear deadlines and give timely feedback on assignments.
  • Answer student questions and offer support in a timely manner.
  • Post all assignments and necessary materials to PowerSchool Learning.

Parents are asked to:

  • Read the Middle School parent expectations to help your child understand their responsibilities while learning from home, who they can turn to for help, and how you can support them.
  • Work with your child to set up Zoom for their online class meetings. Please read through the Zoom Parent Instructions, and contact us if you need further assistance.
  • Maintain a supportive presence, but give students the opportunity to practice building independent study skills during this unique period.
  • Help limit screen time for students outside of school hours with activities like reading books, playing board games, coloring, doing puzzles, cooking, visiting parks and other green spaces, exercising, playing music, or engaging in other artistic pursuits.
