Jane Thompson, Next Head of School

In May 2017, the ASP Board of Trustees announced the appointment of Ms. Jane Thompson as the next Head of School, commencing July 1, 2018.

Jane comes to ASP from the Istanbul International Community School in Turkey, an American-sponsored international school offering the International Baccalaureate program in all three divisions. Jane has served there as Head of School since 2013, and during her tenure she has led the school through IB, CIS, and NEASC accreditations, strengthened academic results, and developed the next phase of strategic planning.

Prior to IICS, Jane headed the British International School in Budapest for eleven years. She began her educational career as a middle school teacher in Southampton, United Kingdom, moved on to a school on the Isle of Arran, Scotland, and then on to Budapest.

Please join us in welcoming Jane to ASP during the Alumni Homecoming and Community Celebration in June!  Read more about Jane Thompson

Next Step for Head of School, Mark Ulfers

Mark Ulfers

Last month, Mark Ulfers was named Executive Director of the Association for the Advancement of International Education, effective August 2018. This announcement follows Mark's decision last year to return to the US to be with family as of July, 2018.

Per its mission statement: as a global community that connects diverse people, ideas, and resources, AAIE helps international educators to lead with vision, wisdom, and integrity.

As ASP's Head of School since 2010, Mark has partnered with parents and with our teachers, staff, and school leadership to help make ASP a leader in international education, and his contributions will be forever valued. How fortunate it is for our school that his work at AAIE will facilitate a continued exchange on international education between us.

Rosalind Wiseman

Visits ASP

Rosalind Wiseman

Renowned author, educator, and thought-leader, Rosalind Wiseman (author of the book on which the movie "Mean Girls" was based), has been listening to and challenging the thinking of young people and adults for the past twenty years.

Ms. Wiseman spent several days at ASP last month, meeting with students, parents, and teachers, leading discussions around adolescent issues including bullying, ethical leadership, and the use of social media, and supporting our school community in building a culture of dignity that promotes the physical and emotional well-being of young people.

Ms. Wiseman's work at ASP was made possible thanks in part to a grant from
the Excellence Fund.

Mona Stewart Retires

After 42 glorious years, Mona Stewart stepped away from ASP on January 31. Aaron Hubbard, Upper School Director, cited "the enthusiasm, care, and goodwill that Mona brings to our school each and every day. Mona has always made a point to reach out and pay attention to our individual and unique needs - sometimes offering practical advice, sometimes soothing counsel and sometimes being simply a reassuring and positive presence. She has made an art of making us all feel special and cared for. It therefore should come as no surprise that, when people look back at their time at ASP, Mona holds a coveted place in their heart."

We invite all alumni, past faculty and staff, to a reception in Mona's honor on Thursday, February 22nd at 3:45pm on the ASP Campus.

Please e-mail Aaron Hubbard if you would like to attend this event, or help in the planning.

The Impact of Giving

Nolop Family

Nolop Tech Shop

Last fall, the Nolop family (top photo above) – Neil, former ASP Trustee Hege, and their sons Chris '07 and Andre '09 – made a leadership gift in memory of Neil's late brother Keith, who strongly believed in the benefits of STEM (science, technology, engineering, and math) education.

As a result, ASP now has an innovative, integrated space where students can explore science, art, engineering, and design.

Opened this school year, the Nolop Tech Shop anchors our STEAM Innovation Center (where STEAM is STEM + Arts firmly embedded) with a production atelier equipped with 3D printers, laser cutters, and other sensitive tinkering tools.

ASP students benefit from a multi-faceted exposure to STEAM studies starting at a young age, opening a range of university and career options later on, thanks to the Nolop family's generous support.

ASP Robotics Club

ASP's robotics club, also known as The Rebel Alliance, has created code which will be run on the International Space Station while the team live-streams with the astronauts on board. This exciting news comes during the ASP team's third year of participation in the MIT and NASA Zero Robots Challenge, during which they have succeeded in advancing to the final round of competition in a partnership with teams from Ronania and Virginia.

This year's competition is a simulation of a robotic exploration for bacterial life on Enceladus, Saturn's frozen moon.

ASP students have written hundreds of lines of code in C programming language using 3D vector math, complex algorithms, and advanced data structures.

The Robotics Club has been a beneficiary of the Excellence Fund many times over the past years.
