STUDENTS BOOK CLUB ...THE LAST WORD! |
|
| Alicia, Lorena, nor I would have ever thought that our humble idea of beginning a book club at ASP would have caught the attention of some 20 people, and created a found community based on an adoration for reading. We began the year with Cath Crowley's Words in Deep Blue, which was a good and heartwarming read to get us started. We then chose Taylor Jenkins Reid's Daisy Jones and the Six, which encouraged many deep and opinionated discussions that got every single member involved. Finally, we read A Good Girl's Guide to Murder by Holly Jackson, which was another fun and easy read to finish off the year. After everyone had completed each read, we all came together to discuss favourite characters, best quotes, and lingering questions. |
| The club was about more than just the novels. It was about escaping from the often pressuring and stressful realities of school by delving into intricate stories and new worlds with our peers. After a long and tiring day, the book club was a time where everyone could hang out with friends - old and new -, play book trivia games, and connect with each other through a universal passion. We learned how to challenge our typical point of view, express complicated opinions, but most importantly, we learned about who we are as readers and how valuable that can be. Reading is so personal to each individual, and we're sure that the book club meant a great deal to each member in its own unique way. After a wonderful first year, the ASP Book Club is very excited for what next year's opportunities will bring. Sophia |

| THE GUARDIAN LIVE EVENT Sarah Perry: The Essex Serpent Sarah Perry will talk about her Victorian-era gothic novel, The Essex Serpent. The story begins in London in 1983. Newly widowed Cora Seaborne seeks refuge in the sea air of Aldwinter, a coastal parish gripped by religious fundamentalism. When rumours reach her that the mythical Essex Serpent, once said to claim lives on the marshes, has returned, she becomes enthralled – certain that the magical beast could be a yet-undiscovered species. The book was the 2016 British Book Awards' Book of the Year, and a TV adaptation arrives this May, directed by Clio Barnard and starring Claire Danes as Cora and Tom Hiddleston as vicar William Ransome. Wed. 8 June 2022 9-10 pm, Paris time £7 plus £0.92 booking fee |
