An exciting month awaits us. Preparations for our move during the Toussaint break are nearing completion and everything is in place for a smooth transition.

Thank you to all the parents who attended our first workshop of the year. The session was an introduction to the many resources available to students for their research and reading needs.

Our second workshop will be on how to search MS-US databases and will be held on Tuesday, October 11 (see details below). The hands-on session is intended for all grades 7 to 12 parents.

Finally, parents and faculty, don't forget to join the book discussion on The Girl on the Train on November 9 in the new US library (details below).

BOOK HIGHLIGHT

Title: Trigger Warning

Author: Neil Gaiman
Pages: 308 pages

Call number: F GAI

Celebrated children, YA and adult author Neil Gaiman gives us his third short story collection. Written during the last decade, each of the 24 stories is meant to be somewhat discomforting if not disturbing.

In Click-Clack the Rattlebag, for example, a young child asks his babysitter for a scary but not-so-scary bedtime story. The child explains that he really fancies a type of stories called Click-Clack the Rattlebag in which night creatures drink your insides and leave your empty carcass hanging in the wind, going click-clack, click-clack... Do I need to warn you, reader...?

Fans of classic detective stories will be delighted with The Case of Death and Honey in which we find our beloved Sherlock Holmes at his older brother Mycroft's deathbed. Before drawing his last breath, he challenges his younger sibling to his most difficult investigation yet, that of solving the mystery of Death itself. Written in two parallel stories The Case… is as convincing a Holmes story as a non-Doyle writer can write.

In the suspenseful The Truth Is a Cave in the Black Mountains Gaiman successfully mixes mystery and fantasy with an air of mythology to create the tale of a family man in search of a treasure.

For our added enjoyment all the stories are briefly explained in the introduction. Trigger Warning introduces us to a fun and motley cast of characters who live in creepy, fantastic and sometimes familiar worlds. You can find some of the stories online, in video and audio formats.

Neil Gaiman "is the author of more than twenty books, and is the recipient of numerous literary honors." (from the jacket)

ROOM TO READ

ASP is happy to support Room to Read through various activities and fund raisers during the year.

Millions of children across 10 countries in Africa and Asia have benefitted from Room to Read’s programs. The plan is to
reach 15 million children with quality education by the end of 2020, but Room to Read needs your help to get there. Invest in their work or learn about other ways to get involved. Imagine a world in which all children receive the education they need to reach their full potential. Now, help make it a reality.

If you are interested in making a donation to support Room to Read's mission please contact Mario Chioini at the US library or click this link to Room to Read's donation secured web site.
