Dear Members of the ASP Community,

It is with deep gratitude, yet with sadness, that we follow upon Mark Ulfers’ announcement of his decision to resign as Head of School in July 2018. His steadfast leadership of the American School of Paris has kept our school at the forefront of international education and has meaningfully impacted all members of our community - students, teachers and staff, parents, and alumni.

Since his arrival in 2010, Mark has worked tirelessly, seamlessly, and always good-humoredly, to nourish the love and wonder of education in our halls and in our classrooms. His strong desire to observe each and every child develop as an individual, to his/her potential, is remarkable. His warmth and openness, and tremendous respect for each individual has helped build an atmosphere of comfort and trust. His vision and leadership has steered our school to become better and bolder - by purchasing our land and improving our facilities, by continuously reviewing teaching practices and investing in our teaching talent, by integrating our K-12 curriculum, and by embracing and celebrating the traditions of our community. Many of these achievements stem from Mark’s vision set out in the strategic plan, our blueprint for ASP transformation. And, beyond the walls of our school, his deep commitment to service learning, such as the Kalahari Education Experience, has honed the moral character and global citizenship of our students.

With the ample notice that Mark has provided by announcing his decision early, we are ready to embark on the official search to find his successor. A sub committee of the Board of Trustees has been formed to guide the search process.  Co-chaired by Board Chair Suzanne Obenshain and Secretary and Advancement Chair Ilse Willems, it will also include trustees Osama Bishai, Alexandre Bosoni and Yvonne Lalonde. This focused team will assist the full Board in its mandate to hire the Head of School, and will communicate with our community directly as the search progresses.

After careful review and diligence, the search committee has selected Carney Sandoe & Associates, based in Boston, USA. Carney Sandoe is a world leader in leadership search for independent and international schools, and has placed excellent talent into many significant roles in the international educational market.  We look forward to working with their highly experienced team to identify the best candidate to lead ASP in its next chapter. We will be back to you in a few days with an update about next steps and how you can participate. The input of our community is important to us.

On behalf of the Board of ASP, we again thank Mark Ulfers for his remarkable and respected leadership, which we know will continue for the next 18 months. ASP is in good stead, and we are confident that we will succeed in finding another great leader for this incredible institution.
