Photo: ASP Class of 2016 held its June graduation ceremony at the Lafayette Escadrille Memorial in the Parc de Saint-Cloud. This memorial is a tribute to the heroic efforts of American aviators who flew with the French Air Service during World War I. Their actions stand as testament to both the longstanding friendship between France and the US, as well as the two nations' collaboration in defending liberty and freedom. 

As the summer days wind down, and as we begin a new academic calendar year, we'd like to take a moment to share some of ASP's notable learning achievements in this retrospective of school year 2015-16:

 
   

Class of 2016: Impressive Results

Congratulations to the American School of Paris Class of 2016. Hailing from 21 countries and speaking 16 mother-tongue languages, these students have demonstrated stellar academic results, consistent involvement in school and community life and exemplary global citizenship. Internationally recognized exam results are also impressive: a 100% pass rate on the International Baccalaureate diploma (world average of 80%); Advanced Placement results: 90% scored 3 or above, compared to the world average of 60%. NASA Astronaut is Keynote Speaker

The keynote speaker at the Class of 2016 graduation ceremony in June was NASA Astronaut Dan Tani. Masterfully weaving his experiences in outer-space with observations gleaned on earth, Astronaut Tani spoke to graduates: Coming from an institution that celebrates diversity and facilitates the development of global perspectives, you're bound to be role models... I'm so optimistic that today we are releasing 89 carriers of the message 'different is good' into the world. Read more

  


New Program for Three-Year-Old Students

 

ASP is very pleased to introduce our new early childhood program for 3-year-olds. The addition of this class completes our comprehensive early childhood through Upper School college preparatory education program. The syllabus features both classroom learning and outdoor-centered education where children will be immersed in the natural world on ASP's spacious, green campus. Read more

 

 

ASP Vainqueur du 6ème Rallye Citoyen

(Translation: ASP is the Winner of the Sixth Annual "Rallye Citoyen')

A team comprised of ASP Grade 8 French class students earned first place, vying against more than 300 students from the Hauts-de-Seine district, in the Rallye Citoyen 2016 at the MeĢmorial de l’Escadrille La Fayette in Marnes-la-Coquette. It was a special honor to to have generals of the French army congratulate ASP students. Read more

 

 

Ongoing Innovation in the Classroom

 

An ASP education emphasizes the skills learners need to succeed now and in the future. For the upcoming school year, innovative courses will be introduced which focus on key markers of a 21st century education including: AP Computer Science, Coding for the Web and for Mobile Applications, 3D Moddeling, Leadership, Global Citizenship, Design and Innovation. Campus Build Project Yields Exciting Results

Excitement is in the air as the ASP campus build project bears fruit with the new Upper School building (image,left) to open right on schedule in November, 2016. Featuring state-of-the-art equipment and learning spaces, the new building will be home to over 300 Upper School students. Additional buildings are 'in the works'. Read more

 

 
 
 


Support and Resillience in Face of Paris Unrest

Last November was marked by tragic and unsettling events in Paris. We are proud of our students' remarkable display of respect, strength, caring, concern, unity, maturity and resilliency ever since. ASP students, teachers and counsellors worked together throughout the year to strengthen bonds within our community and to support each other in moving forward. Read more

Students Give Back

ASP students whole-heartedly worked to give back and support those in need both locally and in the world, consistent with a deep-seeded value of our school to cultivate a broader spectrum of global understanding and develop a sense of responsibility that goes beyond one’s own life. Students organized cake sales with proceeds benefitting refugees in Europe, and initiated blanket and apparel drives; some parents helped transport collected items to refugee camps. Read more

 


COP 21: ASP Students Tackle Climate Change

As world leaders met in Paris last fall for the groundbreaking COP 21 conference where they grappled with the protection of our planet, ASP students worked on campus to develop solutions they themselves could enact. Middle Schoolers collaborated with parents, faculty, and invited subject experts including Bea Johnson, creator and author of Zero Waste Home. Upper School students reported internationally on COP21 events for Global Student Square, working with GSS's Executive Director, award-winning journalist Beatrice Motamedi. Read more


Learning Outside the Classroom

Students took advantage of a multitude of learning opportunities outside of campus this year in Paris and elsewhere.  Events included participating in the TeachHER initiative for female STEAM students at UNESCO in Paris where participants learned how to build solar panels; they also met with educator and US Second Lady Dr Jill Biden. Read more

 


FIRST Robotics Champions

ASP Robotics Club placed a strong second at the FIRST-Tech-Challenge competition this year in Grenoble, competing against teams from across France. ASP’s students used an Android-operated robot and wrote an algorithm for the autonomous period in the competition, allowing them to drive their robot and record its movements to a database on a phone. Strong ASP Alumni Connections

Alumni connections to ASP remain strong well after graduation. This past year included well-attended and high-spirited reunions throughout the world, with many alumni already making plans to reunite on the ASP campus in June, 2018 for the first-ever all-class ASP Homecoming. Alumni also visited campus to speak to current students about their ASP experiences and ensuing careers, including talks by the founder of TeenLife Media and the Deputy Manager of NASA's Mission System on Mars 2020 Project (photo). Guest Speakers Provide Extraordinary Learning

Providing students with their insights and extraordinary learning opportunities and furthering the wholeness of an ASP educational experience, guest speakers on campus this past year included Claybourne Carson, founder of the Martin Luther King, Jr. Research and Education Institute, acclaimed writer and New York Times columnist Timothy Egan (photo), mathematician and journalist Alex Bellos, author and educator Tim Burns and award-winning vocalist Nicole Taylor and concert pianist Debra Takakjian who together presented the African American Spiritual. Professional Instruction and Development

To support teachers' continuous learning and their mastery of 21st century skills, ASP encourages faculty participation in professional development opportunities and invites renowned specialists to campus to work with faculty, such as Differentiated Classroom consultant Carol Ann Tomlinson (photo). In addition, ASP faculty shared their expertises with other educators, leading sessions at this spring’s English Language Schools Association Teacher Development Day conference in Paris, the foremost professional gathering for Anglophone teachers in France. Programs for Parents

American School of Paris, in partnership with our Parent Faculty Association, presented several learning opportunities for parents this year.  Topics included  "Mind-Body Wellness", "The Amazing Brain", "Active Parenting", "Building a Growth Mindset", "Transitions", "Living Skills."  Read more

 

 

Last school year was important and rewarding. Now, as we begin the 2016-17 school year, the ASP campus is again filled with excitement and remarkable possibilities for our young learners.
